What role does hope play in the second half of the novel?

I suppose hope plays a major role in Meursault's court case. Meursault hopes the people testifying  will paint a good picture of him; Meursault hopes the court might not convict him because the victim was an Arab; Meursault hopes this will all end soon regardless of the virdict.
