what is significant about this contradiction? what does it imply? the director says that madame meursault "often expressed to her friends her desire for a religious burial. "Her son thinks "Maman had never in her life given a thought to religion."

This seems to be Meursault's general existentialist views at play again. He usually belittles high concept ideas like religion, love, loyalty.....Meursault feels that life is meaningless. He finds his mother's need for ceremony in her death ironic, even hypocritical.
