Marie asks Meursault if he loves her. He replies that it does not matter and that he does not think he loves her. She looks sad but later laughs.

Meursault is unaffected by the fight Raymond has with his girlfriend. He shows no reaction (nor has any) to the violence of the woman being physically abused.
