I'm assuming you mean in part one. Meursault admits to the reader that he once had ambition but lost it when he had to give up his studies. The result or cause is Meursault really seeming apathetic or ambivalent about everything in his life. His boss offers him a job in Paris and Meursault says one job is as good as another. His boss admonishes him for lacking ambition and drive. When Marie asks her if he loves her, Meursault answers in the same detached manner.
