Arnold Curwing
Arnold Curwing is the protagonist of the story. He is an ordinary nine-year-old boy until he accidentally kills his brother.
Eugene
Eugene is a 15-year-old brother of Arnold.
The parents
Just like any other boy, Arnold has parents. It seems that Arnold and his mother used to be very close but Eugene’s death destroys the bond between them. Arnold’s father seems to study his younger son as if tries to figure out what is going on in his head. However, he doesn’t stop acknowledging Arnold.
Nora
Nora is Arnold and Eugene’s sister. The girl doesn’t know how she should treat Arnold.
Uncle Andy
Uncle Andy is a brother of Arnold’s mother. He is convinced that Arnold is a heartless monster.
The sheriff
He questions Arnold after the tragedy. It is he who gives Andy an idea that Arnold is a mean and cruel person.
