The Bacteriologist is the protagonist of the story. One morning he accepts a stranger in his laboratory and gives him a little tour of the premises. He at once guesses that the visitor is an anarchist, because he is very interested in the living bacterium of cholera. He seems to accept everything that the stranger says at face value.
