What did Jan do to halt the goods train

I don't think he halta the goods train in chaptewr 5. Joseph jumps on the train, but Jan does not see him. He watches the train’s red light fade away, and hears the shrill whistle a ways off. It is raining heavily and Jan is soaked. He tries to warm the cat, and clutches his wooden box with the silver sword inside very tightly.
