The Secret History contains references to inappropriate and abusive conduct in both sexual and familial relationships, in addition to the abuses of power demonstrated by the professor Julian Morrow. Although society's perspectives on and response to cult rituals and the use of psychedelic drugs have changed significantly since the time of the Greeks and even since the time the novel is set, students may still feel uncomfortable with the ways in which abuse of power, drug use/alcoholism, and treatment for these conditions are addressed in the novel.
