who was chauvelin?

Chauvelin is the main antagonist in the novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel. He is a French agent, who's been awarded English diplomacy rights. His job is to apprehend the Pimpernel, and others, who are successfully spiriting members of the French aristocracy out of France and into England..... a place of safety.
