Why could the planned escape to Europe read as a defeat?

It's a defeat for Dimmesdale because he's never lived up to what he considers his own sin. Hester took the punishment for their relationship, and he continued to preach against the very things that he himsefl had done. To run away and not face his own responsibility was in itself a defeat.
