The Scarlet Letter

Why are the townspeople at first pleased to see Chillingworth living with Dimmesdale? What do people eventually say about Chillingworth?

Chillingworth is, at first, considered to be a "doctor" and a healer. They feel that his expertise will help the ailing Dimmesdale. Eventually the people of the town find Chillingworth bizarre. He changes from a kindly old man to twisted wrinkled and withered. He had turned from "a wise and just man to a fiend."
