who is hesters child and why does she refuse to reveal his identity

Hester's child is Pearl. Hester refuses to reveal Arthur as the father of her child. She does not want to ruin Dimmesdale and wants him to reveal his own sin. She, perhaps, wishes to have a relationship again with Dimmesdale in the future.
