Chapter 8
Dimmesdale in his face grows more and more sad and depressed looking as the story goes on. He is suffering from the hiding of his secret and cannot live with himself; we find out later that in secret he is practicing self-flagellation which undoubtedly shows on his face. Chilllingworth is always portrayed as a sort of evil force; he looks evil and is recognized even by Pearl as an evil force.
