What kind of metaphor is Hawthorne developing in Chapter 4?

In Chapter Four, Chillingworth mentions "the token of her shame", which refers to Hester's scarlet letter. This token, as he refers to it is a metaphor.... a token being a keepsake, which in this case, is a reminder of her sin and shame.
