What is ironic about Hawthorne's portrayal of the Puritan society, in terms of this developing theme?

I think that Hester, Dimmesdale and Pearl could actually be a loving family if they were given half a chance. Hester and Pearl are real as opposed to many others in the town who merely pretend to be righteous. THere is a lot of hypocrisy in this town.
