The Scarlet Letter

The Custom House

What are the narrator's notions of decay and ruin in the sketch? How does he generalize about history?

I think that the decay of Custom House speaks to the decay ofthe puritan ethos. The Scarlet letter is a metaphor of a decaying sosiety that has long been poisoned by hypocricy and power politics.
