Hawthorne's sympathies most certainly lie with Hester. Chapter Five depicts Hester's treatment at the hands of the community, her former friends.... even the children in the neighborhood. She is isolated, and yet, still feels the need to reach out to others...... she is ostracizedby some who aren't even aware of her crime.
