The Scarlet Letter

Psychological fiction/ characters ( Hester & Dimmesdale )

Using Dimmesdale as an example, discuss why The Scarlet Letter is a good example of psychological fiction. Are both Dimmesdale and Hester psychologically complex characters? Why or why not?

Yes, both characters are complex characters. They must both grapple with heavy themes like sin, redemption, forgiveness, and private/public loyalties. They both bear this heavy load. Dimmesdale is crushed by it while Hester is able to reconcile herself with her sins.
