The Scarlet Letter

How do you explain, in the first sentence in the final paragraph, the phrase "her former husband"? how did he get to be her former husband? Did i miss a divorce somewhere? Or is there another explanation?

In the last paragraph in its first sentence it says " Former husband"?

Hester ran as far away from Chillingworth as she could get. Hester simply considered Chillingworth to be her former husband: they were still married as far as the church would have been concerned.
