How do the people in the crowd feel in general about how Dimmesdale delivered his Election Day sermon? What undertone did they also pick up on?

Dimmesdale finishes his sermon, and the crowd erupts in loud applause. It marks the highest point of Dimmesdale's life. The crowd, in total agreement with the minister also realizes that he isn;t finished speaking and that he has something important to say.
