Hester and Pearl lived on the outskirts of the village. They lead a life of relative isolation. Hester was branded with the sin of adultery and Pearl was the living testimony to that sin. Hester bore her sin with humble patience. She sewed clothes for charity and made a meager income from sewing gloves for the rich. Hester wore her "letter" without regret and Pearl danced around town with a freedom that villagers outwardly abhorred but inwardly envied.
