The atmosphere is dark and fuelled with Dimmesdale's pent up anxieties finally exploding. There is a desperate sense of redemption in the cool night air. There is an ominous feeling as Dimmesdale stands above the village and exorcises his hidden demons. There is also a sense of light and hope as a comet streaks through the night sky.
