When Stephen and Matsu go to Yamaguchi to visit Sachi, Matsu smells smoke near the village. Matsu and Stephen both enter the village and begin fighting the fire that will destroy some of the small houses. Sachi's home was saved, in part, because of their help in fighting the fire.

The Samurai's Garden

Steven and Matsu are characters from Gale

Tsukiyama's novel The Garden of the Samurai.

1. Sachi is hesitant to let them in at first because he is deeply grieving for Kenzo and

doesn't want any visitors. However, Matsu convinces her to let them in and they spend

days together.

2.

Sachi tells Steven and Matsu about Kenzo's last days and how he died. She also tells

about her guilt and regrets about her relationship with Kenzo, and how she wants

to do more to help him.

3. Steven and Matsu offer their condolences and support to Sachi. They assure

that she was not responsible for Kenzo's death and did her best to help him.

4. Sachi gives Steven a package containing a letter and

other items to take to his father. She asks Stephen to give the package to her father and read her letter himself.

Before leaving, Sachi gives Stephen a small piece of sea glass as a token of gratitude for his friendship and support.
