Yes, the mother's newfound concern for her son is a definite change in the story. Prior to seeing his behavior, she didn't give much thought to her children. She actually didn't seem to worry about them at all. It was nice to see she was capable of mother's emotions, but then again, are her questions based on motherly love or something else. In the end, we have to ask what it was that made this woman such a cold fish.
