How does the mother kill herself in the book and in the movie?

Ive only watched the movie and i cannot recall if she shoots herself or just walks outside into a snowstorm and was wondering if it was different in the book.

In the book she cuts her wrists with Obsidian (kind of a sharm rock). In the movie, they don't really show he kill herself. She just walks off into the darkness.

Sorry I meant a sharp rock. It's actually a naturally formed volcanic glass.
