The Mariner looks pretty sad and forlorn before he states that he shot the albatross. The wedding Guest knows that sorrow and regret plague him.

'God save thee, ancient Mariner!
From the fiends, that plague thee thus! –
Why look'st thou so?'-

The Mariner knows he has done a heinous thing after he kills the bird, so he prays to God for protection.
