Why does Crane choose to write the novel in third person's point of view?

Although, we are unaware of why Crane chose to use this point of view, we can infer that he wanted to present the horrors of war through the eyes of an innocent.... a young man who believes that war is nothing but glory and victory, and the way those initial views of war quickly change when faced with the real thing.
