what stategy do some of the soldiers use to protect themselves in battle?

I'm unsure what exactly you are referring to. Some soldiers, like Henry, run away during the confusion of battle, “What I did was only the law of nature; animals protect themselves...." They then re-group later with a self-inflicted injury and say they got separated during battle.
