What state of mind is Fleming in by the end of this chapter? What is causing this

By the end of the chapter he knows that he has to get back to his own troop and fight alongside them. He doesn't want to be know as a coward or to be gossipped about. He wants to go back and take his place with the rest of the men in order to cease being the slng phrase "the youth."
