What killed henrys courage to fight again?

Henry wonders what he will say to his fellow comrades once he joins them at the front. He is terrified that they will see through any excuse he gives and will be humiliated and chastised for running. Henry also has no rifle, which adds to the problem. Henry has this internal debate for some time until all his strength and courage seems to drain away.
