I think Henry is a boy who does not understand the harsh realities of war. He is lost in the illusion of adventure, patriotism, and masculinity that he perceives the war will bring him. Like many boys his age, he is eager to fight and be validated by heroic actions he imagines he will perform on the battlefield.
