how henry changed

I was just wondering if any one could tell me how henry changed after the battle. I know he became courageous and saw him self as more of a man. but I want to know why.

Henry goes through much spiritual and personal debate. Initially he sees his cowardly act of running away (in battle) as a failure. He is terrified of finger pointing and recriminations from his brothers in arms. Later, as Henry sees more soldiers trickle into the camp, he realizes that he was not alone (in running away). This gives Henry a new perspective. He begins to view his retreat a rite of passage, a necessary thing to do at the time. This epiphany is a sort of baptism for Henry. He begins to fight hard. Despite being scared he puts himself in the "zone", fights hard and earns his red badge of courage in battle.
