I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to (in regards to his "return"). Do you mean after the first battle in which he flees the scene? If so, then when he returns to his camp he lies and says that he was separated during combat and was shot. The soldiers, presumably preoccupied with their own fear, don't even really take heed of the excuse or the reason behind it.
