I'm not too sure what you are asking here so I'll try to cover both angles. Henry really ran because he was scared. Many of his comrades turn and ran; Henry ran too. Henry's explanation to the other soldiers was that he lost his bearings and got separated from the regiment, "over on th' right. I got separated." This eventually is not questioned and Henry looks at his retreat as sort of a rite of passage.
