I think this is related to the fact that their past mistakes and losses in battle are irrelevant. The present battle is the only fight of concern and the past successes or failure means nothing.

They were so happy to have been given accolades from the liutenient that none of the bad things mattered anymore; errors and disappointments were forgotten.
