Isabel- the most important thing to Isabel is getting married to Larry. Unfortunately, the Larry who came back from the war isn't the one she became engaged to. She wants things to be the way they were, and when she finally realizes that they can't....... she breaks off the engagement and marries another.

Elliott Templeton- He loves his money, and the position and friends it gets him in society. After he gets sick, he's irritated that his "society" friends don't visit, but he also ruminates that he's had a great life moving within that society, and that he's sure to continue within his societal rank upon entering the pearly gates.

I believe our narrator is also our author, who in the end concedes everyone has gotten their true desires;
