After the Henry II's death, the entire court changes. The Guise family rises to the top, and those families who enjoyed an elevated status under the now dead king found their fortunes changed. In essence, we can infer that power can be found in who you know, and who is in control.

“In brief, the whole complexion of the court changed” (139)
