The Poetry of D.H. Lawrence Summary

Submergence

Here, the narrator is describing how when standing on the sidewalk, he is amazed by all the people around him, and feels they look like a cosmological phenomenon. He describes ow he gets so submerged in this feeling that he is even capable of forgetting his own grief.

Tease

In this poem, the narrator is tormenting a curious lover with the fact that he might have potential secrets that he is keeping from her. The narrator enjoys whipping this woman into a frenzy, giving her enough information to be suspicious, but never enough to figure anything out. This way he maintains firm control of the situation.

Beautiful Old Age

Here, the narrator talks about how it should be lovely to grow old because age is a sign of a life long lived and fulfilled, and how people ought to praise and admire the elderly because of this. The subtext is that of course, people don't.

A Winter's Tale

In "A Winter's Tale," the narrator describes a woman making a journey to see him as winter grows more intense. he expresses confusion at the woman's desire to see him because he has bad news for her and she knows this, but comes anyway.

Snake

In this poem, a snake comes to drink out of the narrator's water trough because it is a very hot day in Sicily, where the narrator lives. He describes feeling fearful, awed, and honored by the snake drinking out of his trough, but also conflicted because the snake might be poisonous and his education has told him to kill it. Eventually, as the snake leaves, he throws a stick at it, an act he forever regrets because it made it leave faster.

Lies About Love

Here, Lawrence describes how humans view love as an object with fixed value, like a coin, and claims this is a lie about the nature of love. Lawrence believes it changes in value every year and that this is natural and the truth about love.

A Love Song

This is a poem about a lover who the narrator want to be with, but can't. He likely hasn't seen her in a while as he is forgetting details about her, but he still dreams about getting to be with her at night despite the time that has passed.
