] The rural setup can be seen in how the people react to mother's scorpion bite. As more people come to visit the speaker's mother, the speaker takes in his surroundings: "More candles, more lanterns, more neighbours, / more insects, and the endless rain" (30-31). The speaker's mother, oblivious to it all, spent this time suffering and twisting on a mat. The decidedly rural atmosphere makes the narrative more believable.
