Who is Flora? WHo is Baines?

Flora is one of the novel's main characters. She travels to the frontier in New Zealand, where her mother has been sold into marriage. Her mother, Ada, is mute. Flora does not know why.

Baines is a retired sailor, who makes his home in the forest. He is smitten by Ada, though Ada is oblivious to his attraction.
