Tentative Topic and Tentative Thesis Statment

I'm doing a proposal sheet and I just read The Great Gatsby, and my teacher told us to pick out a secondary novel, so I chose the perks of being a wallflower. What would be an example of a topic and a thesis statement? I really don't know what to do.

The real question is, Are you supposed to do your proposal, topic, etc., with both books or with the new one you chose? Are you supposed to compare and contrast something? Is there some similarity between the two books you want to talk about?
