His writing helps him express the emotions that he keeps bottled up inside. Charlie's "friend" is never given a name, and I don't think the letters are directed toward any one person specifically. Writing the letters seems to be a form of journaling, allowing Charlie to describe daily events and through this, allowing him to expose and share his thoughts and feelings.
