Why does the author choose not to reveal the robbers' identities?

When the robbers' try to steal the pearl from Kino, their identites always remains secret. Why did the author choose to do that?

Steinbeck isn't concerned with the robbers rather than the effect the robbery has on Kino. It is the pearl's hold on Kino that is the most interesting.
