Steinbeck originally began writing The Pearl as a screen play. The entire novel moves like a movie script and reads like a legend; it's an oral presentation like the tales of old. He uses the third person (omniscient) for his narration. Because of this both the characters and action are presented from multiple perspectives and observations. This form of narration also allows the readers to become intimately aware of the characters' thoughts, even the minor character's opinions are sometimes revealed............ giving the reader extensive knowledge of the characters' inner workings, and thus a greater understanding of the story's action.
