I Need help figuring out what Kino was like at the end of chapter five of the novel the pearl.

Kino is a desperate man at the end of Chapter 5. His house has been ruined, he's killed a man, and his boat has a hole in it (not accidental). He's terribly afraid, has nowhere to hide, and he doesn't know what to do...... he's desperate!
