What is the tone of this excerpt from "The Pearl"?

"In his chamber the doctor sat up in his high bed...life was memory and longing for France."

I think the best description for the tone of this passage would have to be "longing." The doctor misses his homeland and feels as if he isn't even alive while working in the fishing village with the natives.
