What does the pearl buyer's coin symbolize?

I believe the coin symbolizes the wealth and power that Kino does not possess. The dealer almost taunts Kino as he roles the coin between his fingers. The coin is intended to intimidate Kino into selling his pearl for far less than it is worth.
