The Pearl

What does Steinback mean in this Pearl quote? :0

What's Steinback trying to say with this quote?

"But let one man step out of the regular thought or the known and trusted pattern, and the nerves of the townspeople ring with nervousness and communication travels over the nerve lines of the town."?

What does it mean, could you explain? Thank you :DD

This refers to those people who don't follow the norm... the predetermined rules of the community. In Kino's village, everyone went about their business.... they wroked, took care of their childrens, and dealt with the day to day activities that were regular.... natural. Kino's discovery of the pearl, and his planned journey to sell it were a huge deal.... something no one else had ever done, and thus, everyone joined in the excitement. News like this didn't merely prove to be a big deal for the participant.... everyone wanted to join in.... they didn't want to miss a thing.
