This quote exemplifies what the two have left, β€œthe sun was behind them and their long shadows stalked ahead, and they seemed to carry two towers of darkness with them.”

From this we can see that the good days the bright days) are behind them....... what they have left is a patch of darkness............... this is what they've been brought to by their own actions.
