on page 15 Steinbeck tells us that because of the mixture of the air and water over the gulfs creates mirages the indians do not trust what they see with their eyes. How could this fit with the theme of "apperance versus reality?

I think this becomes a metaphor for the pearl itself. The pearl appears to be of great fortune for Kino: it is like winning the lottery. In reality the pearl brings nothing but suffering and loss to Kino and his family.
